Foodie Friday – Meals Meant to Share

foodiesfeed.com_people-feasting-on-healthy-salad-buffet

Last weekend we had a reservation at Canon, a newer “farm to fork”  restaurant that has made a splash.  We went with some good friends, which is what I was looking  forward to most.  I was a little nervous that the hype would exceed the reality.  We tried to go there a few time previously without a reservation (rookie mistake and a long story about misplacing a gift card to Frank Fat’s…) and they said it would be a two hour wait!  Magpie had a seat for us though.  Lesson learned… get a reservation.

Canon, as in a collection (not the thing that shoots out balls of iron or lead), specializes in small plates and fresh, seasonal foods.  With a now fashionable, open kitchen canon has a simple and modern feel, located in a neighborhood in need of some more life.  In fact, people ask me, “Now where is it?”  I reply, “You know where the feed store is between Stockton and Folsom Blvd?”  Yeah, that’s where it is!

The ladies started off with cocktails (Negroni and top shelf Gin and tonic), which they seemed to love, as they got seconds later on.  Our server gave us a great run-down of what Canon is all about and made some fantastic recommendations.  We followed his lead and requested a bunch of small plates to share.  A quote form their website, “Meant to be shared and to spark conversation our seasonal menu highlights the best California has to offer.  This indeed is what transpired… wonderful conversation, accompanied by tasty and healthful treats.  My friend commented half way through, “I love the pace of the meal … I don’t feel rushed at all.”  I loved this too, when a restaurant finds a rhythm that suits your occasion.  This is harder to accomplish that you think. Maybe our server got lucky, or maybe he was actually paying attention and discerned our tempo.  I give the server props for being on point.  Plus, he answered all of our questions and my musings on beer and wine.  He seemed more energized than annoyed.

Each bite offered something new.  There were flavors that we all guessed what they represented.  “Is that a pear?  Or kimchi?  What is that sauce?  I think it’s Greek yogurt?  Yum!”  It goes without saying, this is a place that needs to be experiences.  Mere words on a blog do not do the food justice.  Needless to say, it lived up to the hype.  Oh, and get dessert!

FRANK FATS

Last weekend was also my mom’s birthday.  We thought it’d be fun to take her to Frank Fat’s, one of the older restaurants in Sacramento(since 1939!).  Also we knew this would be a place where our boys would enjoy, as well as my parents.  When it comes to Chinese food, it’s easy to think that they are all alike – greasy goodness.  Fat’s definitely breaks this mold.  We were all delighted by the flavors each dish brought.  I was stuffed but couldn’t stop eating!  Their banana cream is off the charts!  The flaky crust makes it unique.  And, they hooked up the birthday girl with a free slice.

HOME SPUN (not a restaurant name, rather, our home)

Our valentine’s tradition is to stay home, since we go out to frequently just because, and because we love each other!  My wife made some delicious Costco bought clam chowder, Caesar salad with avocado, bread and Champagne  (uh, I mean sparkling wine, from our latest adventure in Murphys!).

SHOUT OUT

Our oldest does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Ultimate Fitness.  My wife and I dropped him off the other night and dropped in on the pizza place across the street to grab a beer and conversation.  Z Pizza tap room, noted for self-serve beer –  Interesting concept.  I like it and will go back.  I hope they rotate their beer selection. Also it seems like they need an update to their software that controls the pours.  They were having some trouble, to our advantage… the gal that worked there kept giving us samples on her wrist band /tab, as she was trying to figure out the glitch.   Next time we’ll get some pizza.  Oh and I dig on these beer bottle lights!

I’m eager to hear about new, or old places you’ve been lately that you like and/or that I should try!

Midtown Sacramento CA – 4 plex for Sale

I’m excited to present this classic four unit income property.  As you may know, rents have gone a little crazy in Midtown, unfortunate for renters, but income property owners are loving it.  With the advent of Golden 1 arena, gobs of new restaurants opening every month, and the coming of the railyard build-out, this building is still a winner now and in the future!Flyer

Please contact me if you have interest.

Sacramento Eats Revisited

Good to see this older article’s restaurants come to fruition.  It lists restaurants, mainly in Midtown, that were coming on the scene in 2015.

I’ve been to most of them …. here’s some commentary:

24006909

#1 –  Empress Tavern – If you didn’t know, this is the meat eaters version of MOTHER (a wonderful restaurant that serves no meat).  Or, at least the same owners, I’ve been told.  Killer, coved brick walls and ceilings that make you feel like you’re sitting in a speak-easy of some sort, except they have LED lights and mirrors (no windows) that brighten the place up.  I took my wife there on a special date – my fault for not confirming the reservation.  I made the rezo on an answering machine, um, I mean voice mail.  Do people still have answering machines?  “Wait honey, rewind the tape and play it back to me.”  We arrive and they don’t have my name on THE LIST.  The place is fairly empty on a Tuesday night at 6:00pm, but they tell me that everything is booked for a later party, blah, blah, blah.  We sat in the bar seating area, aka, people-that-didn’t-make-reservations-punishment place.  Okay, I exaggerate.  It was still cool a joint and delicious food, but the initial impression soured my experience.  I will go back a 2nd time.  We just ate a bunch of appetizers – loved the brussel sprouts

#2 – Hawks Provisions and Public House – I must try this place.  Darling, if you are reading this, put it on our next date night, please.

#3 – Braisserie Capitale – never heard of it – any good?  anyone?

#5 – Fish Face – Heard it was delicious!  Out of sight, out of mind.  Kru is legit and one of our go-to’s when wanting to see a sushi chief boggle your mind with his fluidity.   Billy’s like the high-end, night club DJ of sushi, with the sensibilities of Rembrandt. He does have a hand washing fetish though (I love you Billy) – but you want this when it comes toFullSizeRender fresh fish – right!  Just saw this today while grabbing a Peets coffee (think this may be #6 on the list).  Seems like everything Billy Nho touches turns to gold.  Is it just me, or is he blowing the lid off this town?!

#7 – Bottles and Barrow – Trendy concept.  Maybe I’m just jealous of guys who actually can style their hair, or have hair?

#8 – Iron Tavern – It’s kind of like a modern day TGI Fridays with decent beer and really good food.  I was surprised, and kind of wanted to not like it, but I actually do.  The poke nachos are delicious… and my wife got this bloody Mary that was more like a meal than a drink.  It had a strip of bacon in it for god sakes!  Another trendy thing, which I like… if only I liked tomato juice.

#10 – B-Side Bar – Great local bar with a boom box frontage – yeah, it looks like an old school radio like I had in the 5th grade.  Put it on your shoulder and turn it up.  B-side has records in the window, taking it to a whole … nuther… level!

#11 – Coin Op – Ah yes, then there was a bar with old video games.  I actually went there and had an informal Donkey Kong battle with a few guys – none of us got very far, but it brought back some memories, of me spending a zillion quarters on this game when I was a kid.  Very good selection of brews and tasty pizza too.dk__46436.1381332517.1280.1280

#13 – Chandos – … nuff said.  Actually I’m going to say something that may be controversial.  I like Chandos, but I don’t love Chandos, like everyone else.  There are better tacos out there.  There, I said it.

#15 – Track 7 Natomas – The only reason I go to Natomas – to sell a house, or go with buyers to show a house, or visit my homie Earl (shout out to 8 Track Masacre – and who doesn’t love a rockin’ 80’s cover band!).  Curtis Park Track 7 is my hood.

#16 – Magpie – I’m a big fan.  Been there a bunch of times and have only good things to say about it.  Besides, my wife loves it… men, you need to tune in to what your spouse likes, and do that – whatever it is, even if you don’t like it.  Just so happens, I really like Magpie.  Yeah, yeah – it’s hipster-ville at it’s finest.  The people watching is great fun.  I think the hostess had on a plaid 70’s dress which made me feel like I was at a dress up, decades party.  I didn’t mind it at all.

#17 – The Barn in West Sac. – Still being built out – this place has some fantastic architecture flow going on, and I can’t wait until it’s done.  Should be a great hang spot if they do it right.

#20 – (the new location) Shoki Ramen House – Just went there a few weeks ago, at the old Trails Restaurant on 21st, near Broadway – only 4 block from my house, which the old one was 2 blocks away (on 24th st and 2nd Ave.) – Noodles to Thai for is now in that location, which you need to try – I liked it way better than Shoki.  Maybe their Ramen is just not my thing.  Their menu mainly consists of a build-a-bowl of Ramen that is a little too much decision making, and gets expensive.  A dollar more for green onions – com’on!  I’ll pay a dollar more for an egg, but not onions.  I just ended up getting a standard  bowl and it was okay.  Just okay.  If you like Japanese soup, you’ll probably love it like everyone else.  I actually like my friend Dennis’ ramen up at Kansai – great sushi too (Dennis – glad you started hitting up Jiu Jitsu.  You’ll be submitting me before you know it… well, actually it’ll take a long time, but maybe you can tap out Nate – ha ha ha).

What’s your take on any of these haunts?

Cheers,

Potential New Housing Development in Alkali Flats (Midtown, Sacramento CA)

I love seeing new development that fills in blighted areas, increases sustainability, and fit in with the area.  The plan includes mixed use development to include commercial, affordable housing (town homes), and parking. This would be wonderful to see in the Alkali Flats/Mansion Flats area upgraded and fulfill its potential.  Supposedly there has been attempted development on these lots a hand full of times over the last 18 years.  Read the details

Enjoy,

Serial Killer’s Home for Sale – Midtown, Sacramento

There is already a lot of attention on this one!  I’ll just give it a little more.  The house at 1426 F St. is now bank owned and on the market.  This would be one creepy listing to take on.

When I first moved to Midtown, Sacramento (Boulevard Park) in the early 2000’s I heard the stories of Dorthea Puente – especially because I had some friends that lived on the same block.  As the story goes, in the late 1980’s, Dorthea, an older woman in her late 50’s, ran a boarding house with other elderly folks living there as borders.  The live-ins did not have family or others that cared for them … the perfect situation for Dorthea to poison them and continue to collect their social security checks.  Over time she got caught and the police dug up seven bodies in the backyard!  Supposedly the neighbors had complained about a continued stench coming from her property over the years.  And finally the social workers got suspicious when their clients began to disappear. Dorthea is in currently in prison  – serving a life sentence for murder.  For a fuller story, check out this recent article or this one for more details – or just search Dorthea Puente.

As disclosure laws go, one has to be up front with the history of a property, especially when it is as notorious as this one.  And it would be hard to hide this one in the backyard.  It’s interesting to note that the yard has been paved over – sort of like, let’s seal in whatever might lie beneath the surface.

Would you buy a home where a serial killer resided?

Is it going to sit on the market?  Or sell quickly?

Enjoy,
